The new work will open to the public on October 13, 2026, and run through April 11, 2027. It will be the 11th commission in the series, which is supported by Hyundai Motor Company. Atoui, who was born in Beirut in 1980 and is now based in Paris, is known for installations and performances that explore sound as a physical and spatial experience. His work often involves custom-built instruments developed in collaboration with other artists and engineers, incorporating materials such as glass, water, and ceramics. These instruments are activated through touch, air, and mechanical systems, producing compositions that combine live sound, field recordings, and digitally generated elements. His installations frequently extend beyond traditional listening, engaging audiences through vibration and other sensory forms.

The Hyundai Commission invites an artist each year to produce a new work for the Turbine Hall, a former industrial space that has become one of the most prominent sites for contemporary installation art. Since its launch in 2014, the partnership between Tate and Hyundai Motor Company has supported a decade of commissions and attracted more than 19 million visitors. The collaboration, described by Tate as its longest initial corporate partnership, has been extended through 2036.

Catherine Wood, Interim Director of Tate Modern, said Atoui’s practice “blends music, technology, sculpture and performance” and engages with architectural space as part of his exploration of sound. DooEun Choi, Art Director at Hyundai Motor Company, described the artist’s work as creating “a tangible sensory experience that unites musical instruments, physical spaces, and the audience,” emphasizing its collaborative and experimental nature.

Atoui studied sound art and electro-acoustic music at the French National Conservatory of Reims. He has presented work at institutions including the Sharjah Art Foundation, Serpentine Gallery, and Venice Biennale, and his installations are held in major collections such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Tate. His Turbine Hall commission will mark a return to Tate Modern, where he has previously presented work, and will extend his ongoing research into how sound can be experienced as both a material and a spatial condition.
